About the author

Patrick Dickson was an enlisted man in the Air Force for 13 years, and was lucky enough to be assigned to beauty spots and vacation destinations – the Colorado Rockies near Lowry Air Force Base; Aviano, Italy; MacDill AFB, near Tampa, Fla.; and Royal Air Force Lakenheath in England.

But wilder, more remote places captured his imagination, and he often asked others about their assignments to Shemya, Alaska, and other “remote, unaccompanied” tours. The air base at Thule, Greenland, was one such place.

In September, he flew to Thule to report on life there – the missions, the environment and the people. These are his stories.
